A milk sanitation inspection program has been administered since the late nineteenth century. Until 1972, this inspection program was carried out under city ordinances, local Board of Health regulations, and State Board of Health regulations. With the passage of the Milk and Milk Products Act of 1972, the Department of Health was charged with carrying out the statewide milk control program.
